Tomboy style
Although I originally planned to write mainly about the American tomboy, the boyish style can take many forms, or several quite different styles can easily fit under this name. Again, it depends on whether other characteristics of the person and their personality suggest a more elegant, “girly” version or a more relaxed, sporty one. So what does tomboy style look like? First of all, it is inspired by men’s clothing, whether it be shirts, pants with suspenders, suits or a baggy t-shirt and boyfriend jeans with sneakers. A different look is the so-called Kibbe’s gamine, which is also basically a boyish style, but dresses and skirts are worn in addition to pants (mostly A-line and elements such as buttons, pockets, bold colors are common) and it is a very cheerful, almost pixie-like style.
Tomboy personality
It kind of depends if you talk about tomboy or gamine. Tomboys often have in common a slight disdain for conventions and how they “should” look, they are naturally rather cheeky and daring, they have a lot of energy and may or may not play sports, computer games, work in rather “masculine” professions (management, sports, crafts, manufacturing, machine operating, …). They have a good sense of humour, don’t take life too seriously and spread a positive vibe around. Tomboys will be “rougher” and gamine more cheerful, youthful and elegant. Both variants are similar, they usually differ mainly in their open attitude towards their surroundings.
A tomboy woman usually knows who she is, from childhood she rejects conventionally girly things.
What does a tomboy wear?
Women in tomboy style usually look youthful, they can wear their hair long, but they often come alive with short hair – the pixie cut suits them very well. A romantic woman would look pathetic with such hair, a tomboy-style woman looks natural, rejuvenated and gets just that cheerful, pixie look. They often wear pants, with a t-shirt or shirt, they can wear a blazer and look good in it. They also go with more elegant elements like polka dots, or girly – round – collars and A-line dresses. Shorts and striped shirts are good for summer, and accessories can be colored glasses, a tie, a hat – it depends on the type. A great example of a woman boyish style is Ellen DeGeneres.
